JIM WASHINGTON: Outrage mixed with a creeping sense of familiarity as a whistleblower revealed that the National Security Administration has been collecting calling data on every customer Verizon has.

JIM WASHINGTON: The creeping sense of familiarity turned to vague feelings of alarm when it was revealed that companies not “directly” sharing data with the NSA may have been doing so indirectly, under a project called PRISM, through a contracting agency known as “Palantir.”

JIM WASHINGTON: It has been pointed out that a “Palantir” was a device featured in J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy, a device that allowed someone to communicate with far-off locations instantly, but also risked destroying the person’s mind if it came into contact with a stronger, darker power.

JIM WASHINGTON: In other news, Christopher Tolkien is reportedly considering filing suit against the NSA for “astonishingly incompetent plagiarism.”
