ALEX: Ubersoft Technical Support, Alex speaking. How can I–

CUSTOMER: Look, I can’t let go of this. What’s the point of selling your software in a store when you don’t actually provide anything in the package for people to buy?

ALEX: Sir, we don’t actually sell software. We never have.

CUSTOMER: You could have fooled me. I thought you were a software company.

ALEX: Sir, software companies don’t sell software. They license software. When you bought UberWordSoftPro at the store, you weren’t buying software, you were buying a license to use the software. The license is the only part of the software you own.

CUSTOMER: I see.

ALEX: So you went to the store to by a license for our software. That’s the way it’s always worked, only we would also include a copy of the software with the license because it was more efficient to do so. Now it’s more efficient to have you download it over the Internet, so we’re doing that instead.

CUSTOMER: Then why don’t you just convert everything over to an online purchasing model and force everyone to buy your software online as well?

ALEX: Well a lot of people don’t like doing that.

CUSTOMER: I see.
