The Less Ridiculous Number

ALICE: (Whispering) Go on.

ALEX: (Whispering) I don't want to.

ALICE: (Whispering) Just say it!

ALEX: Very recently, a reader pointed out that in the last few strips we have been describing the latest version of Nifty Doorways as "Nifty Doorways 20," while we had previously established it as "Nifty Doorways Eleventy."

ALICE: We can't use both, so we decided to go with "Nifty Doorways Eleventy" on the grounds that it's the less ridiculous number.

ALEX: Wait. "Eleventy" is the less ridiculous number?

ALICE: It's a marketing thing.

ALEX: That makes no sense.

ALICE: Other "numbers" less ridiculous than "20," from a marketer's perspective: Apricot. Moped. Flugelhorn. Dysentery.

The comic images are showing

The comic images are showing up unreadably tiny for me, but only if I use Chrome. Safari and Firefox show them normal size. (I'm on a 13" MacBook Air.) In the element inspector, today's also seems to be straddling the right side of its box; I didn't inspect others. I'm seriously considering ditching Chrome, but would not recommend that recommendation as the general fix....

I'm not sure why it would

I'm not sure why it would start doing that now, but when I have time I'll take a look at it. Unfortunately I can't predict when I'll actually have time...

It dawned on me a while ago

It dawned on me a while ago why MS jumped directly to Windows 10 (or at least a plausible explanation for it): they didn't want to break all the Javascript out there that sniffs UA strings for "Windows 9*". It doesn't explain why Windows 7 has a version string of 6.1.xxxx (they definitely could have justified calling 7 a full jump from Vista), but at least not using 9 makes sense to me... same idea as that blog post about all the internal bugs they replicate so as to not break 3d party software that relies on them.

Thanks for more Help Desk. I

Thanks for more Help Desk. I make my living supporting Windows so it hits home.

That was actually the stated

That was actually the stated reason why they used 10 instead of 9. Windows 7 really is Vista with saner defaults. No, really.

I just assumed Eleventy was

I just assumed Eleventy was silently upgrading itself to Twenty. As I notice those comics have done.

The comics also usually have

The comics also usually have the "Magnify" option enabled.
Today's doesn't for some reason. ???

I have no idea what the

I have no idea what the magnify option is, but I'll look into it.
